Jamie Foxx wears a Pineapple Shirt in Day Shift

There are a lot of issues with this film. On one hand, it really loves gratuitous, meaningless violence. There’s no reason for any of this violence at all. The glorification of the violence is also troubling.

Let’s put that aside, though. Let’s just say that violence is fun, and it was a fun movie to watch for the violence. The messaging here is still frustrating just in terms of union/corporatization/self employment work aspect. For the first and largely the second acts of the film, they paint this union as terrible. Yet, being in the union is highly desirable since one can earn higher wages. But as the film progresses, they are able to thwart the union’s rules and regulations through study of the rules(?) I guess.

Ok, this argument is heady; kinda silly. At the end of the day, no one cares about the implications or the messaging the film has about union busting or work in America (let’s face it, this movie is commentary on the United States of America).

Let’s also, then, talk about the vampires themselves. Who are they meant to represent? It’s clearly “The Other”, and in my opinion, they represent immigrants. Be it illegal or legal immigrants in America, the vampires in this film represent immigrants and their evil plan to take over suburbia.

Ok, maxtim, let’s settle down. You’re reading to far into this fun action flick about vampires.

Many times while I was watching this movie, I kept asking “Is this a comedy, or is this serious?” They keep dropping these joke (which fall flat, more often than not; maybe they just weren’t for me), but then they have all this exposition; they’re trying to build all these rules for this universe. And, ok, so there are vampires in this world and they’re pretty powerful, etc, etc. We’re really supposed to believe that dude’s baby momma doesn’t know anything about vampires at all?

And all the tropes… This like “buddy cop” intro was pretty frustrating as well. If all you’re looking for is a violence filled, body horror, and grotesque film; yeah this is one of the movies of all times. If you’re looking for a Comedy Action film. I dunno. This movie takes it self too seriously, but also doesn’t at the same time and it’s mostly frustrating. Which is why I can’t really call it a good ole’ mindless fun film either. It jams so much exposition in the first act that it’s so distracting.

I give it a two Jamie Foxxes wearing pineapple shirts out of one vampire Snoop Dogg.
